Why Did Peter Petrelli Need Nathan’s Help?

Very cute post from screenwriter Devra Maza about the writer’s strike.  (Read it and see why we miss these guys.)

While her main point involved the romance aspect of such a striking situation, I couldn’t help noticing her question about why Peter Petrelli needed Nathan’s help to fly out of orbit to get rid of the radiation last year.  I logged on to her post and said it was because:

“Peter Petrelli was weakened due to the radiation he was carrying, and needed Nathan’s help in flying as far out into space as possible.”

What are your theories?  Did they ever really clarify this on the show?
