Who is your favorite character on Heroes?
For many, it’s Sylar. And for good reason. He’s an interesting character, and I think it’s due in equal parts to the writing and the actor. After all, Zachary Quinto has played him with a touch a mischief and sadness in addition to his “just being bad.”
Mischief, you say? Sure. When you know he’s about to do some bad stuff, like when he was traveling with Maya and her brother, he’ll say something with a smile and a wink. People trust him. As did Maya - poor girl. The scene where they are standing by the car and he tells Maya’s brother (who supposedly cannot understand English) that he is going to kill him and then kill Maya, and he does it with a little tiny smile that makes you scratch your head. You WANT to hate the guy… but at the same time you’re curious as to what he’ll do next.
And sadness? Absolutely. Those scenes with this mother were heartbreaking. He WANTED her approval. For a moment (a MOMENT, mind you) it made you feel sorry for him.
To that end, I read an interesting article from Keith O’Neilon how Sylar really steals the spotlight on the show. I disagree with him on one aspect. I think Masi Oka steals every scene he’s in and in the first season Peter Petrelli was the most interesting. Now, Peter seems less fascinating but Hiro is still one to watch.
O’Neil also mentions Jeph Loeb, who is a writer on the show and has also written for Hulk and Superman comics. My husband and I often comment that the show takes liberties from the X-men series, and O’Neil comments on this as well. He laments about the lack of action in Season 2, and well, Tim Kring has already acknowledged that Hiro should have come back to the present day sooner and the whole love story with Claire and the flying guy was dumb. So that’s been covered.
Still, I enjoyed his article because I agree that Sylar is interesting to watch.
Ironically, Sylar isn’t my personal favorite. I like Hiro the best - I think he embodies the geekiness needed to make him sweet yet powerful and the sadness needed to make him vengeful when he needs to be. (Like when he put Adam in the coffin and buried him. YIIIIIKES.)

[...] I so miss watching Hiro on Monday nights in Heroes on NBC! Masi Oka is just too cute for words and he seems like a sincerely nice guy by the way he was talking to paparazzi like that! So let’s go… Sylar Keeps Things Interesting [...]
